The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is one of the most anticipated yearly events that showcases all of the best in gardening. This prestigious flower show has taken place in the grounds of Chelsea Hospital since 1913 and this year 500 exhibitors from around the world came to London to take part. At Taylor Made Planters we were thrilled to commission some of our handmade designs to display a selection of fascinating plants on show. There’s a lot on offer at the Chelsea show so here’s a walk-through the 2017 highlights.
City Gardens
A strong theme that came out of this year’s event was the importance of gardens in urban environments. Many displays were showcasing pioneering city designs with rippling water displays and native wildflowers. These gardens created amazing colourful displays whilst considering the role of plants in tackling pollution and helping wildlife, which many are expressing to be more important than ever. Take a look at the clip below from the Chelsea Flower Show that discusses making concrete cities greener.
Plant of the Year
Mulberry ‘Charlotte Russe’ was named as the 2017 Chelsea Plant of the Year, a dwarf mulberry tree that is only 1.5m tall. This petite plant is self-pollinating and produces berries from June to September, so if you are lucky enough to order one, it’s the perfect choice for a garden planter!
Edible Gardens
The Chris Evans Taste Garden was part of the five ‘BBC Radio 2 Feel Good Gardens’ to inspire one of the five senses. This beautiful garden is a fantastic reminder that a vegetable garden isn’t just edible, it looks fantastic too! 50 healthy varieties were grown in the Taste Garden, everything from leafy greens and olive trees to cherry tomatoes and strawberries. Mixed together with herbs and colourful plants, it’s enough to inspire anyone to grow their own crops! Take a look at our vegetable planters or herb garden planters to start your own vegetable garden.
Animal Sculptures
Some of this year’s most popular gardens featured unique animal sculptures. James Doran-Webb won the Best Trade Stand Award 2017 for his incredible display of driftwood animal sculptures.
Easigrass took to the Chelsea show once again with their artificial grass exhibition. They are popular for their realistic grass products and added a 19ft giraffe to their stand as part of their animal sculpture range. We love this topiary inspiration!
The World Horse Welfare Garden won the People’s Choice Award this year for its moving display. This exhibition told the story of Clippy, an abandoned pony who was nursed back to health by the World Horse Welfare.
