When choosing an indoor planter, it is important to consider the needs of the plants you want to grow inside your home. Different plants require different conditions in which to flourish and your choice of planter can have an impact on how successful this is. In terms of size, you should opt for smaller pots for succulents, cacti and those that are more drought-tolerant, whereas large indoor planters should be reserved for container gardens or taller plants. Material-wise, there are several options available, but the plastic Lechuza, fibrestone and fibreglass planters for sale at Taylor Made are lightweight, durable and guaranteed to hold moisture for longer.
Generally speaking, the answer is yes. Drainage holes allow excess water and fertiliser salts to drain from the soil and help keep a good airflow around the plant. If your planter doesn’t have a hole, it is very easy for your plant to become soggy and develop root rot, which can be fatal. In instances where indoor planters don’t come with holes or you don’t want to create one yourself, there are alternatives. These include adding a “drainage layer” from pebbles to draw excess water away from your plant’s roots or selecting a planter made from a porous material and housing this within an attractive pot with sufficient drainage capabilities.
Providing you proceed with caution there are many instances where you can move indoor plants outside. When the weather gets warmer, we recommend giving your plants a mix of indoor and outdoor time so that they can slowly adjust to their new environment. Failure to do this may send your plants into shock, undoing all of the time you’ve spent nurturing their growth. At most, we’d suggest keeping your indoor plants outside throughout the warmer weather, gradually increasing their exposure to direct sunlight over time. When temperatures start to drop, you should begin your houseplants’ gradual transition back indoors, giving them adequate time to adapt to their new surroundings.
As with everything related to plant care, the frequency at which you water your houseplants is entirely dependent on their individual needs. And whilst some need watering more than others, a good rule of thumb is to ensure that the soil is kept moist at all times without adding too much water to the pot. The condition of the soil is easier to regulate if your planter comes with a drainage hole, and you should take care to choose the correct pot size for your plant’s requirements as this may affect the amount of water it needs.
