A Herb Garden is easy to grow and brings many benefits to both your garden and kitchen. More and more people are now enjoying the rewards of growing their own food, and home-grown herbs are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops to grow. Many herbs thrive when grown in a planter or container and they allow you to move your herbs around, whether it’s to receive more light or bring them indoors.
It’s easy to landscape a small space simply with herb planters to create an attractive and aromatic environment. Large planters provide the space to plant herbs together and create a beautiful, fresh display. Soft herbs like basil, chives and coriander are popular choices for home-grown herbs as they are great for cooking when fresh.
Growing Basil
Basil is a staple herb for many dishes and is best eaten fresh. Basil grows well in containers and thrives in well drained, rich soil. During the summer, it is important to pick the leaves regularly to encourage growth.
Growing Chives
Chives thrive in a lot of sunlight but it is capable of growing in most environments. Chives look great in a display as they produce bright edible flowers. However by snipping these flower buds the Chives plant is encouraged to grow.
Growing Mint
Fresh mint is a popular home-grown herb and is particularly suited to container growing as it removes the concern of roots spreading underground and interfering with other plants. Mint requires plenty of water but it can grow in areas of partial shade so it’s important not to over water this crop.
Growing Parsley
Parsley is a low maintenance herb when left to grow in the right conditions. It has an amazing fresh flavour and grows well in plant containers, requiring rich soil to grow well.
Growing Thyme
Thyme can grow to a height of 30 cm when left to grow in a sunny and sheltered environment. Thyme only requires watering in dry conditions so its a great first herb to grow if you are new to gardening.
The golden rules of growing herbs in containers
Once you’ve chosen which herbs you want to grow, always remember these quick tips:
- Keep them watered – if conditions are dry some herbs may require extra watering
- Give the roots proper drainage – ensure your container has this capability
- Provide direct sunlight – most herbs require at least 4-6 hours of direct light each day
- Prune them regularly to encourage growth
