Generally speaking, pots and planters refer to the same thing: a container to keep plants in as they grow. Yet there are times when these two words are used to refer to different items. In these instances, a pot will usually describe a smaller, rounder plant container with space for a single plant, whereas a planter will describe a much bigger item able to house multiple plants.

Bubble wrap or newspaper may also be used to line the bottom of your planter as these are materials that can help your plant retain moisture without losing soil.
